George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson on the beloved sitcom Cheers, has died at the age of 76. The actor passed away peacefully in his sleep at home early Tuesday morning, according to a statement from his family.

Wendt portrayed Norm in all 275 episodes of Cheers, which aired from 1982 to 1993. His performance earned him six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

He later reprised the beloved character in spinoffs The Tortellis and Frasier.

Following his time on Cheers, Wendt briefly starred in his own CBS sitcom, The George Wendt Show, where he played a radio host and car mechanic. He first came onto the comedy scene with regular appearances on Saturday Night Live during the 1990s.

Wendt’s publicist, Melissa Nathan, confirmed his passing with a heartfelt message.

“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever.”
