The list of accolades that Emile YX? has received continues to grow, now being the recipient of a National Order.
Emile Jansen’s career in hip hop dates back to 1982, when he started breakdancing for the Pop Glide Crew. And thus has also earned him the title as the “Pioneer of South African Hip Hop”.

From humble beginnings in Grassy Park, to the world stage, Jansen continued to achieve success since his Black Noise Crew placed third at the Battle Of The Year contest in Germany in 1997.
But he’s not only made contributions to hip hop culture with dance, but also as a rapper. As a member and co-founder of the Black Noise Hip Hop Group, he went on to release 13 albums. Each album was mindfully crafted to combine good music with social commentary.
Through his artistry and activism, Jansen has championed Afrikaap, a unique expression that celebrates the African origins of hip-hop and fosters cultural pride. His achievements from 1982 until now has lamented him as a driving force in promoting hip-hop and empowering youth through creative expression.
Hip Hop Honouree
Jansen’s pioneering efforts in arts, culture, and hip-hop has now earned him the prestigious accolade of the President’s Order of Ikhamanga in Silver.
The President’s Order of Ikhamanga is one of South Africa’s highest honours, given to those who have significantly influenced the nation’s democracy and enriched the lives of its people. Jansen receiving this accolade highlights his role in shaping the country’s cultural landscape. Jansen will officially receive the award on 30 April.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” Jansen says. “It’s a recognition of not just my work, but of every breakdancer, hip-hop artist, educator, and activist who has contributed to our movement. Together, we can continue to make a positive impact.”
He hopes that this recognition will support the establishment of the Heal The Hood Creative Wellness Center in Grassy Park, and facilitate the spread of creative solutions nationwide.
