Following reports that train fares could increase, particularly for monthly ticket holders, Metrorail has confirmed that an announcement will be made early next week.

The announcement comes as motorists are also waiting for the latest fuel price figures, with changes to petrol and diesel prices expected to be announced soon.

PRASA Western Cape spokesperson Zino Mihi says commuters will be given more clarity next week.

“PRASA Western Cape will issue communication regarding the matter early next week. We will provide the relevant details and clarification at that time.”

When asked if she could share any details as to the percentage fares could increase by, in the event of an increase being announced, Mihi said she was not in a position to do so.

“Please wait until next week.”

Meanwhile, Metrorail in Gauteng has confirmed that commuters can expect an increase in monthly ticket prices from November.

The increase will apply to monthly tickets, while other ticket types, including single, return, weekly and off-peak discount tickets, will remain unchanged.

Earlier this month, Golden Arrow also increased some of its cash fares by 4.5%, mainly affecting off-peak trips.
