Heritage Day has its food sorted. There’s the braai, of course, along with family recipes, generous tables and the inevitable debate over who makes the best pap.  

But what about the drink? 

This September, South African spirit apéritif Bangbroek is putting forward the Honey Badger Signature Cocktail as a possible signature drink for Heritage Day. 

It’s a distinctly local take on the spring cocktail. Inspired by the fearless honey badger, the drink brings together cinnamon, fresh lime, ginger ale and a subtle chilli kick. The result is a combination that balances sweetness, citrus and gentle heat, making it well suited to a relaxed afternoon around the braai. 

It’s also simple to make.  

Fill a glass with ice, add 25ml fresh lime juice and 50ml Bangbroek, top with 200ml ginger ale and finish with a wedge of lime.
