The Western Cape is marking October Mobility Month by bringing transport services closer to residents. The provincial Mobility Department will host its first-ever Open Day in Athlone, offering practical assistance, road safety activities and information on various transport programmes.

The event, on 1 October 2026, will officially launch October Mobility Month and form part of celebrations marking 70 years of Provincial Traffic in the Western Cape.

Residents will have the opportunity to access a range of free services, including vehicle safety checks, assistance with motor vehicle and driving licences, roadworthiness information and public transport permit assistance.

The department says the Open Day will also offer career information, including registration for the Jobseeker Travel Voucher Programme and information about the Traffic Officer Cadet bursary programme.

Road safety activities will include a drunk-walking simulation, while visitors will also be able to explore electric vehicles. Free health and eye checks, a bicycle maintenance station and activities for children will also be available on the day.

Western Cape Mobility Head of Communication, Muneera Allie, says the department wants residents to better understand the role mobility plays in their daily lives.

“Mobility is about much more than getting from one place to another. It is about connecting people to work, education, services and opportunities, and getting goods where they need to be.”

 

Allie says the Open Day will give residents an opportunity to engage directly with the department.

“We’re inviting residents to come and meet the people behind our services, ask questions, make use of what we have on offer and learn more about how we are working to keep people and goods moving across the Western Cape.”

 

The event will run from 9am to 3pm at the Vangate Shared Services Centre.
