“Trash Bash” at Monwabisi Beach

Published on

The Two Oceans Aquarium Trash Bash team is gearing up for a special beach cleanup event at Monwabisi Beach on Saturday, 16 March 2024.

This cleanup celebration is in honor of False Bay Hope Spot, a crucial marine ecosystem that is home to a variety of marine animals and is enjoyed by the local community. The aim of this initiative is to protect the marine life in False Bay and create awareness about the importance of conservation efforts.

False Bay was designated as a Hope Spot by Mission Blue in 2019, recognizing its significance as a crucial marine environment in need of protection. The Two Oceans Aquarium, in partnership with Cape RADD, has been named a co-champion of the False Bay Hope Spot.

“What better opportunity than the Monwabisi Trash Bash beach cleanup to celebrate False Bay’s environmental importance as a Hope Spot?” – Heather Wares, Two Oceans Aquarium Communications Manager.

Trash Bash: Environmentally-conscious fun

Trash Bash is an ongoing initiative by the Two Oceans Aquarium aimed at engaging the community in regular beach cleanups around Cape Town. These cleanups have drawn thousands of volunteers since 2018, all committed to removing litter such as plastic bags, bottles, straws, and wrappers from the beaches. By doing so, they contribute to the protection of marine life and the overall health of the oceans in the area.

“Cleaning a beach is one of many easy and fun ways of contributing to ensuring a healthy natural environment while providing data for scientific studies. It is also an opportunity to connect with nature.” – Helen Lockhart, Two Oceans Aquarium, Conservation & Sustainability Manager for the Two Oceans Aquarium

“Beach cleanups are vital as they prevent plastic and other trash from being deposited into the ocean and beyond our shores.” – Helen Lockhart, Two Oceans Acquarium, Conservation & Sustainability Manager for the Two Oceans Aquarium. IMAGE: Supplied
