Take a Step with Smile FM

Every day in South Africa, women and children live with the devastating reality of gender-based violence.

It’s not just a 1 in 3 statistic. Families are being torn apart.

Lives changed forever.

Lives lost.

On Sunday, 29 November 2026, we will walk together – for survivors, for families, for hope.

Join Smile FM at Ratanga Park, Century City, for a 5km walk and Take a Step against Gender-Based Violence.

Because every step you take is a voice.

Every step you take is support.

Every step you take leads towards change.

The Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children

The Saartjie Baartman Centre was opened in 1999 in response to the high rates of violence against women and children on the Cape Flats.

It is South Africa’s first “one-stop” centre, providing essential, cost-free services 365 days a year to survivors and their children.

Services include:

  • A 24-hour crisis response programme
  • Shelter and transitional housing
  • Psycho-social and children’s counselling programmes
  • Legal assistance and child protection services
  • Substance abuse and economic empowerment programmes

In May 2024, the Centre was accredited as a National Khuseleka Centre by the Department of Social Development – a model of intersectoral partnership designed to keep women and children safe.
