Cape Town has a new landmark

Published on

The Mother City has a new landmark and it’s located at the most visited place in the country, the V and A Waterfront. The City now boasts a sign, which has the letters of the word Cape Town.

The New Alfred Square

Each letter is a 3D representation of the 8 mountain peaks in the region.

The new landmark is located on Alfred Square, a public plaza where Capetonians and tourists can connect in the V&A neighbourhood.

It plays a significant part in making Cape Town a feel-good destination that delights visitors from all over the world.

The new landmark was unveiled on the square last night. The square is located in front of the Victoria and Alfred Hotel.

“Tourist attractions are places of culture, heritage, nature, or activities that draw people to visit. The Waterfront continually works hard to stay true to this with our main purpose being to allow public access for entertainment, interest, or education, all year round.”

– David Green CEO at V&A Waterfront

Green added that physical visitations give them the opportunity to curate movement and to give moments for visitors to pause.

At the same time, it affords them the opportunity to interact, take in their surroundings and mark their place in Cape Town.

Intricate 3D layering

The new Cape Town sign, in letters that stand 1.65m high, signifies the city’s fingerprints in the form of “contours of the Cape”.

It is an intricate 3D layering of the topographical shapes of eight Cape summits, including bucket list Table Mountain and Lion’s Head.

“As far as locations go, it doesn’t get more iconic than this. Nestled at the southern tip of the continent between the wild Atlantic Ocean and arguably the world’s most famous mountain, this Bay, this harbour and this Waterfront carry with them so much history and meaning for our city.”

– Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis

Hill-Lewis said it’s fitting that the Waterfront is the setting for the new City Sign.

He says it’s the marker in the world where visitors can pause to reflect on their arrival in one of the world’s great cities.

“It offers a wonderful sense of place, and an opportunity to capture on camera an unforgettable Cape Town moment,” he ended off.
