A case of culpable homicide is being investigated following a fatal crash in Mitchells Plain over the weekend in which one person was killed.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the accident occurred at the corner of Merrydale Avenue and Spine Road, Portlands, on Saturday. According to police spokesperson F.C Van Wyk, a taxi ignored a red traffic light and collided with another vehicle.

“According to reports, the 41-year-old deceased was driving a Grey Mazda 323 with his wife and child, crossing Spine Road in Rocklands when a Toyota Quantum with no passengers jumped the robots, and drove into the deceased’s vehicle.”

Van Wyk said the deceased’s 8-month-old child and his wife were transported to hospital for further treatment.

“The 39-year-old taxi driver was taken to the Shadow Centre and afterwards a nearby hospital for treatment. The deceased’s wife and baby were taken to Red Cross Hospital for treatment.”

This incident comes less than a week after an accident on Highlands Drive, Colorado, in which a 39-year-old lost his life when a taxi drove into two stationary vehicles at a red traffic light, causing one of the vehicles to go up in flames, with the driver inside.

Local authorities are appealing to anyone with any information to come forward to assist in the investigation.
