Three minibus taxis were torched at the Nyanga taxi rank over the weekend, marking the second such incident at the facility this year.
A case of malicious damage to property has been opened at Nyanga police station after the vehicles were set alight on Saturday night. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Captain F.C. Van Wyk advised that at around 22:30, the City of Cape Town officials informed SAPS officers who were on patrol in the area of the fire.
“On arrival members saw that three taxis were burning. The taxis were parked at the Bellville side of the rank,” said Van Wyk.
Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said confirmed the incident noting that crews from Gugulethu responded to the incident. Law enforcement officials were keeping the area secure, Caresel said.
“By 22:50, firefighters extinguished the blaze that destroyed three minibus taxis,” said Carelse noting that the cause thereof is not known at this stage.
He confirmed that no injuries were reported.
The latest incident follows a similar fire at the same taxi rank in March, when nine taxis were destroyed.
