Premier League Weekend Recap: Son’s Heroics, Liverpool’s Surge, and More

Published on

English Premier League weekend brought us a thrilling set of matches that had fans on the edge of their seats. Son Heung-min was the star of the show, earning Tottenham a crucial point in a pulsating 2-2 draw against Arsenal. Meanwhile, Liverpool flexed their formidable firepower, moving into second place in the Premier League with a convincing 3-1 victory over West Ham. But that’s not all – Brighton climbed up to third after a comeback win against Bournemouth, and Chelsea’s woes continued as they failed to find the net once again, losing 1-0 at home to Aston Villa.

This is what you’ve missed this weekend.

Son Shines in North London Derby

Tottenham Hotspur, under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, have been on an upward trajectory. However, their track record against Arsenal in away league meetings has been dismal, with just one win in their last 31 encounters. The North London derby is always a heated affair, and this one didn’t disappoint.

Arsenal got off to a bright start, and their early efforts paid off when Bukayo Saka’s strike found the back of the net, thanks to a deflection off Cristian Romero. But as we’ve seen recently, Tottenham doesn’t back down easily. They fought back from a goal down, and the man of the hour was Son Heung-min.

Just before halftime, Son swept home a cross from James Maddison to level the score. However, Romero’s day took a turn for the worse when he was penalized for a handball, allowing Saka to convert a penalty and put Arsenal back in the lead. But, Arsenal lost Declan Rice to injury at halftime, and that proved costly. Jorginho’s error gifted Tottenham an equalizer just a minute later, with Son once again on target.

The optimism surrounding Postecoglou’s early tenure at Tottenham remains intact, as they showed character in the face of adversity.

Liverpool’s Resurgence

Liverpool, the reigning Premier League champions, had a disappointing season last year, finishing fifth. However, they seem to be finding their rhythm again. They cut Manchester City’s lead at the top to just two points, and with their fearsome firepower, they could be City’s biggest threat.

Mohamed Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool with a penalty after being brought down in the box by Nayef Aguerd. West Ham, who had suffered their only previous defeat against City, equalized before halftime thanks to Jarrod Bowen’s diving header.

But Liverpool had something special in store. Alexis Mac Allister’s perfectly executed chip found Darwin Nunez, who volleyed it into the far corner. Then, Diogo Jota came off the bench to seal the deal with a goal, making it 3-1.

Brighton’s Comeback Win

Brighton and Bournemouth clashed in a thrilling encounter that ended 3-1 in favor of Brighton. Roberto De Zerbi made several changes to his Brighton lineup, and it resulted in a slow start. Dominic Solanke took advantage of a glaring error from Brighton’s goalkeeper, Bart Verbruggen, to put Bournemouth ahead.

However, Brighton roared back. Milos Kerkez’s unfortunate own goal brought them level just before halftime. But the real game-changer was Kaoru Mitoma, who came on as a substitute for Brighton. In a mere 16 seconds, he put Brighton ahead with a precise finish. Mitoma wasn’t done, though. He headed home Pervis Estupinan’s cross 14 minutes from time, securing the three points for Brighton.

Chelsea’s Struggles Continue

Chelsea, despite their massive spending in the summer transfer window, are enduring a nightmare start under Mauricio Pochettino. In their latest outing, they failed to score for the third consecutive game, and things went from bad to worse when Malo Gusto received a straight red card for a reckless tackle on Lucas Digne.

Aston Villa took full advantage of their numerical superiority, with Ollie Watkins finding the back of the net with a powerful strike from a tight angle. Chelsea’s expensive squad has failed to click so far, and they’ve managed just five points from Pochettino’s first six league games in charge.
