And while there’s pretty much nothing that will make having your period, well, not terrible, there are plenty of ways to make it suck less.
Don’t pretend it won’t happen, track your period
While living in denial can be bliss for things already out of our control – keeping tabs on your flow and menstrual cycle is actually a blessing. You can prepare better and never be stuck without a pad in your purse, or it might just make you feel better knowing when its coming.
Reach for healthier versions of your cravings
Why do we grave everything fatty, salty and super sweet? According to experts, it’s because our brain experiences a dip in serotonin a week before our period. Our body’d natural response is to crave foods that trigger that instant happiness. And while it’s okay to indulge a little, add some complex carbs, whole grains, healthy fats and fruits to those cravings. Think: Nutella on whole-grain bread, peanut butter and dates and frozen yoghurt with nuts and fruit.

Use a heating pad
This one is simple, heat is warm and cozy, and stimulates blood flow and lessens the pain from cramps. You can find electric ones that need to stay plugged in, ones that need to be microwave-heated or those classic warm water bottles. Even hand warmers will work in a pinch.
Move that body – even if it’s just a little
The last thing you want to do when your body is in pain, is go for a run or a hike. However, when you move your body, endorphins (happy hormones) are released, counteracting the hormones (prostaglandins) that cause period cramps. A pro tip is to workout for an hour after taking pain meds. This is the time needed to for the meds to completely kick, providing you a plethora of pain relief!
Eat iron-rich foods
Your body is letting off blood during your period, for some, they can become prone to anemia if the iron is not replaced. Try eating poultry, red meats, leafy greens like spinach or fortified cereals. Try and get some Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet. It can help ease period pains. Treat yourself to some delicious salmon, trout or sardines during your period.
Masturbate (or have period sex)
This might not be for everyone, but many women online attest to orgasms alleviating their cramps. This might be due to the rush of oxytocin. Remember to lay down a towel as it can get messy. And if you are going to engage in vaginal intercourse, be sure to remove your tampon. And even though you might be on your period, you can still fall pregnant from penetrative sex during your period: so do not skip out on the birth control.

Sip on ginger tea and lots of water
Dehydration can make you more irritable, feel faint or lead to headaches. That is why it is important to drink enough water while on your period. Spice it up with a cup of ginger tea when you’re feeling really low. Ginger not only helps with nausea, but can reduce inflammation and painful cramps. And if you’re struggling to sleep, serve up a cup of chamomile tea.
Keep spare panties at work or in your backpack
Those few days of having your period might not be the prettiest, but planning ahead for those leaks and spills can make things more manageable. Keep a pair of good undies in your drawer or backpack, or pack in an emergency pack of period panties.
