Table Mountain’s ‘first lady’ raises thousands for WSAR and TMNP

Published on

In an extraordinary display of determination and heart, Tania Rosslee Morkel has achieved her goal of raising an impressive R64,000 for Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) and SANParks – Table Mountain National Park.

At 64 years old, Morkel has taken on the remarkable challenge of summiting Table Mountain 64 times — one ascent for every year of her life.

She undertook this mission following a serious fall on the same mountain, turning a moment of adversity into a powerful comeback story.

On September 13, 2023, Morkel’s life changed forever when she plunged 18 meters down a ravine on Table Mountain.

Her niece, who accompanied her on the hike, immediately called the Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR). An Austrian hiker with a medical background came across the scene and stabilised her until the WSAR team arrived.

“The team’s expertise and compassion were evident as they assessed my condition and prepared for evacuation. Their actions and those of my quick-thinking niece and Austrian “angel” helped save my life. Three hours later, I was airlifted to safety by Air Mercy Services and taken to the renowned Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital.”

Morkel suffered multiple spinal fractures and two lumbar burst fractures, a fractured skull, a brain haemorrhage, several broken ribs, a punctured lung, a lacerated kidney and spleen, and damage to her liver, among other injuries. She spent 23 days in ICU, most of these on a ventilator, fighting for her survival.

As she slowly regained her strength Morkel says she felt a deep desire to give back to WSAR, the team that was instrumental in saving her life.

Additionally, she wanted to support Table Mountain National Park (TMNP), and through raising funds, aims to enhance footpaths and signage to inform hikers of potential dangers.

So far, she has completed 38 of her 64 planned climbs, drawing admiration and support from across the community.

Her journey has not only showcased incredible physical and mental strength but has also shone a spotlight on the vital work done by WSAR and SANParks.

“We congratulate her on achieving this incredible milestone and say a massive THANK YOU to our wonderful community for your generosity and support. Together you’ve made a difference.”

Supporters are encouraged to keep an eye out for Tania on the mountain and to cheer her on as she powers through the final climbs of this extraordinary challenge.
