The victory (?) of Women’s Day in South Africa

Published on

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the high level of gender-based violence was a stain on South Africa’s Women’s Day celebrations. He addressed thousands of people at the Silahla Sports Stadium in Richmond, KwaZulu-Natal, saying, hardly a day goes by in this country without a report of women being attacked, violated or killed by men and that this cannot continue.

Meanwhile: A professor of Philosophy at Stellenbosch University says rape culture is endemic in South Africa, and the underlying violent behaviour that fuels it needs to be addressed. The recent gang rape of 8 women in Krugersdorp has been described as nothing short of the shame of the nation, and it has sparked protests against illegal miners, who have been accused of waging a campaign of terror against residents on the West Rand. Statistics show that more than 100 rapes occur each day, with numbers higher than in some countries at war. Professor Louise du Toit says for perpetrators it’s about power.
Also: The victims of a gang rape in Krugersdorp have identified some of the suspects. This has been confirmed by Police Minister Bheki Cele. Nearly 2 weeks ago, 8 women were allegedly attacked, by zama zamas, while shooting a music video.
