Another 10 139 new coronavirus cases have been reported in the country, over the latest 24-hours.

An additional 272 deaths have been confirmed, taking the death toll to 77 141 deaths. The recovery rate stands at 91,2%. At the moment, there are more than 152 000 active infections in South Africa.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal has officially entered the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Premier Sihle Zikalala has placed the blame for the surge in infections on the recent unrest. Over the past week, the province saw a 31% increase in infections, while the hospitalisation of Covid-19 patients had also increased by 16%. Over 800 pupils and teachers had tested positive.
