Investigations are underway after human remains were discovered in Mestel Dam in the Pretoriuskop section of the Kruger National Park.
According to South African National Parks (SANParks), Field Rangers intercepted four individuals allegedly engaged in illegal net-fishing on Friday, 28 August 2026. While three of the suspects complied with instructions and were safely taken into custody, a fourth entered the dam to evade arrest.
In a statement, SANParks Head of Communications and Spokesperson JP Louw says teams launched an instant rescue operation, searching tirelessly for days inside and outside the park boundaries after recognising the immediate danger of the water.
The search tragically came to an end on Monday, when monitoring rangers spotted human remains in the water. According to Louw, the deceased was recovered shortly after with the help of emergency services and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
“The loss of a life under these circumstances is a profound tragedy that weighs heavily on everyone involved. Our hearts go out to the family and community navigating this painful loss. We also share our immense gratitude with the rescue teams who poured their energy into the gruelling search.”
Louw confirmed that the SAPS is now leading the formal investigation and forensic identification process to bring definitive closure to the family.
