A former Senior Superintendent has been jailed for corruption. Elvis Frank Nontyi worked at the Stellenbosch Municipality Driver’s Licence and Testing Centre. He was recently found guilty of issuing learners’ and/or driver’s licences to applicants in exchange for money. The total amount paid to him by these applicants was R5 550.

According to the office of the Western Cape Hawks, the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced the 55-year-old on six counts of corruption. He had pleaded guilty in the case. Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi says Nontyi was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment, of which three years were suspended for a period of five years. “The accused was further declared unfit to possess a firearm,” added Vukubi.

He further added that the accused had access to the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS). Vukubi said, “He was authorised to test applicants for learner’s and driver’s licences, including the issuing thereof.” The court found that between 17 March and 19 July 2022, the accused had issued learner’s and/or driver’s licences to applicants in exchange for money. This was paid to him in cash by the applicants, and the total amount was R5 550.00. Meanwhile, the Western Cape Head of the Hawks, Major General Makgato, said he’s pleased with the sentence. Makgato says it sends an explicit, strong message to those who abuse their authority for personal gain.
