14 Of The Greatest Albums Of All Time

Michael Jackson’s Thriller album is known as the best-selling album – and the greatest – of all time. It sold some 70 million copies worldwide, with nearly 50 million sold in the US.

 

However, in 2018, an unexpected contender took the title in the States.

 

The Eagles with their Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975), released in 1976, was confirmed to be the best-selling album of all time in the US. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) then reported sales of 38 million copies. Overtaking MJ’s 1982 Thriller by 5 million copies.

 

 

Fast forward to 2023, we are so lucky to have witnessed some of the greatest contributions to music. Here are 14 Of The Greatest Albums Of All Time as an appetiser for helluva music ride.

 

 

Thriller by Michael Jackson

This album was stuck in the No.1 spot for 17 consecutive weeks – twice. Once from Feb. to June in 1983 when Beat It and Billie Jean topped the charts. And the second time was between Dec. 1983 and April 1984, when the Thriller music video dominated the world.

 

 

Falling Into You by Celine Dion

Despite the lukewarm response from critics upon its 1996 release. Falling Into You has remained a wildly successful album thanks to timeless hits like Because You Loved Me and It’s All Coming Back To Me Now.

The Bodyguard Soundtrack with Whitney Houston

The album is almost exclusively made up of her performances from the 1992 movie. The album will forever be remembered as housing one of the greatest songs of all time: I Will Always Love You.

 

 

Hotel California by Eagles

1976 was a major year for the Eagles (refer to intro), and it ended with them releasing another successful album. Hotel California was released in December of 1976, and went on to win at the Grammy Awards.

 

 

The Diary of Alicia Keys by Alicia Keys

This album debuted at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It sold over 610,000 copies in its first week! It have the masses three top-ten singles: If I Ain’t Got You, You Don’t Know My Name and Diary. The album sold over 5 million copies in the US, and over 8 million units worldwide.

 

 

Purple Rain by Prince & The Revolution

This was Prince’s sixth studio album. It received a Grammy nod for Album of the Year, for giving the world top 10 hits like Let’s Go Crazy, Purple Rain and When Doves Cry.

 

 

Melodrama by Lorde

Presenting Lorde’s second album, released in 2017. The New Zealand singer said the emotions felt after he breakup with her longtime boyfriend, inspired part of the album. Melodrama is reportedly Lorde’s record about being alone: the good parts and the bad.

 

 

I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got by Sinéad O’Connor

It known as the music masterpiece that set O’Connor into 90s mega-stardom. The album was inspired by the end of her marriage: it’s all about loss and redemption. No one will ever forget her stunning cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U.

Anti by Rihanna

It’s vibey, and something you would enjoy at 2AM on a Thursday. Rihanna attested to the album’s moody feel: I just gravitated toward the songs that were … the things I want to listen to…The things that I want to smoke to.

 

 

21 by Adele

Many credit 21 with reviving the recording industry. It spent 10 consecutive weeks at No.1 and was highlighted by mega-hits like Set Fire To The Rain, Rumour Has It and Rolling In The Deep. Its outstanding performance at the Grammy Awards cemented Adele’s reputation as one of the best solo acts of our time.

Legend by Bob Marley & The Wailers

Bob Marley is one of the biggest names in reggae music history, and this album made him the best-selling too. Legend was released in 1984, three years after his death.

 

 

AM by Arctic Monkeys

This is Arctic Monkeys’ most memorable album, thanks to their banger Do I Wanna Know?. The 2013 album also housed some of the band’s most successful hits like Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?, Snap Out Of It and Arabella.

 

 

Faith by George Michael

The album sold over 20 million copies worldwide, and saw four singles hit the No.1 spot in the US. George Michael’s solo effort nails mixing soulful ballads like One More Try, with raunchy funk hits like I Want Your Sex and Hard Day.
