Teaching and learning is continuing as normal at Blossom Street Primary School in Athlone, despite reports of alleged inappropriate behaviour against the acting principal.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond says the accused is currently not at the school while the department investigates the allegations.

“The Department takes these allegations extremely seriously and is cooperating fully with the South African Police Service (SAPS) as part of an ongoing police inquiry into the matter. In addition to the criminal investigation, the WCED has initiated the necessary labour relations and disciplinary processes in accordance with departmental procedures.

When asked if the allegations referred to are of a sexual nature, Hammond confirmed that such information cannot be disclosed.

It has been confirmed that five learners came forward, sharing disturbing accounts of events. Hammond says while these allegations are being investigated, the main concern is to ensure stability within the school and provide those affected with the necessary support.

“We wish to reassure parents, learners, and the broader school community that the school remains stable. The Department has arranged psychosocial support for learners, with social workers and other support personnel available at the school to provide assistance.”

SAPS has since confirmed that no criminal case has been registered.

“The matter was reported to the Nyanga FCS Unit; however, no criminal case was registered yet. This office will give an update once a formal case is registered.”
