The Western Cape SAPS has advised that no criminal case has been opened in connection with an alleged altercation between a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and a civilian in Elsies River.
A video circulating on community crime groups since 12 July appears to show a scuffle before the uniformed official is seen hit and kick a member of the public.
Police spokesperson Andre Traut said the incident occurred during a crime prevention operation in Balvenie Estate, where SAPS members had arrested suspects for alleged drug-related offences.
“As members were returning to their vehicles following the arrests, a member of the public allegedly attempted to throw a stone at police officials. The individual was immediately prevented from doing so by members of the SANDF,” said Traut.
He noted that no injuries were reported.
“At this stage, no criminal cases have been opened against either SAPS or SANDF members in relation to the incident, nor have any formal complaints been received by SAPS regarding the conduct of members involved,” added Traut.
Meanwhile, Traut noted that that operation resulted in the seizure of 59 Mandrax tablets, 338 packets of cocaine and about R2,000 in cash believed to be linked to drug dealing. A suspect is expected to appear in court on drug possession and dealing charges.
SmileFM has approached the Defence Ministry for comment on the alleged altercation, which will be added to this article once received.
