A newborn baby girl has been found alive inside a shopping bag in a bush in Oakford, KwaZulu-Natal, after allegedly being abandoned there for about 20 hours.

Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) says a man and woman were walking to a local tuckshop on Tuesday morning, 13 October, when they heard a baby crying.

They followed the sound and discovered the infant inside a Woolworths shopping bag. The baby was wrapped in a black T-shirt, with the placenta also inside the bag.

Paramedics examined the newborn and found her to be in good health. She was transported to a local government hospital for medical attention.

RUSA says a resident told officers she had seen a woman entering the bush with a shopping bag at around 2pm on Monday.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, with officers appealing for information that could help identify and locate the woman.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the RUSA Operations Centre on 086 123 4333.

KwaZulu-Natal police have yet to respond to queries on the incident.
