The Western Cape Police’s Anti-Gang Unit has arrested a notorious gang in Manenberg on Tuesday following an exchange of gunfire metres away from a voting station in the community.
According to police, the unit is part of the South African Police Service (SAPS) deployments to ensure the safety of communities during the administration of the 2026 local government elections.
Police Brigadier Novela Potelwa says the Anti Gang Unit members, who were strategically deployed in Manenberg, spotted a notorious wanted gang member who started shooting at police upon seeing them.
“The AGU members returned fire and arrested the suspect. The suspect, aged 32, was found in possession of a firearm with an extended magazine and 32 rounds of ammunition,” said Brig. Potelwa
Potelwa has clarified that no one was wounded during the shooting incident that occurred approximately 150 metres away from a voting station on Ruimte Road, Manenberg.
The suspect is expected to appear in court on charges of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The brigadier added that the Western Cape SAPS management has hailed the vigilance and prompt operational response of Anti Gang Unit members that averted a potential shooting incident and resulted in the arrest of a wanted gang member.
