Traffic on the N2 near Knysna has returned to normal following a tragic truck crash that occurred on Thursday. The incident, which involved a heavy motor vehicle overturning and catching fire, resulted in two fatalities.

The crash caused significant disruption to traffic flow but has now been cleared, with two-way traffic reinstated as of early Friday morning.

According to the Western Cape Mobility Department, the accident took place at 04h20 on Thursday, involving a truck carrying explosives in three containers.

Deputy Fire Chief with the Garden Route District Municipality, Deon Van Wyk, confirmed that the containers had been safely removed by the Hazmat team.

Knysna Municipality’s Christopher Bezuidenhout confirmed that this followed a busy night of clearing the scene of the accident.

“It took several hours to do this carefully shortly after the crane and cargo trucks arrived,” said Van Wyk.

The incident was attended by various teams, including Knysna Municipality Fire Services, Garden Route DM Fire and Rescue Services, South African Police Services (SAPS), and Western Cape Provincial Ambulance, among others. The Greater Knysna Business Chamber also provided refreshments to the rescue workers.

GRDM Mayor, Andrew Stroebel, extended his condolences to the families of the truck driver and passenger who died in the incident.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the driver and passenger who tragically passed away during the incident. We thank the emergency responders and all those assisting at the scene.”

Stoebel also reminded the public about the dangers of driving while fatigued.

“If you feel fatigued, please take a break, rest, or switch drivers if possible. No destination is worth a life lost.”
