As the Easter holiday approaches, the Western Cape Government is offering motorists free 10-point vehicle safety inspections to help ensure safer roads during the busy travel period.

The initiative aims to encourage drivers, particularly those planning long journeys, to assess the roadworthiness of their vehicles before heading off.

The free checks will be conducted by qualified examiners and cover essential vehicle components such as tyres, brakes, lights, suspension, CV joints, electrical systems, exhaust systems, wipers, and licence discs. However, officials have clarified that these inspections are not full roadworthy tests but rather an assessment of vehicle fitness.

Motorists will receive a printed report highlighting any potential issues that need attention.

The Western Cape Mobility Department has reassured the public that driver licences will not be scanned for outstanding warrants or fines during the inspections.

Where and When to Get a Free Vehicle Check

The inspections will be available at multiple locations across the province from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM on the following dates:

  • Friday, 11 April
  • Monday, 14 April
  • Tuesday, 15 April
  • Wednesday, 16 April

Motorists can visit the following testing centres for their free safety check:

  • Gene Louw Traffic Training College (Brackenfell)
  • Hessequa Municipality (Riversdale)
  • George Municipality (George)
  • Saldanha Bay Municipality (Langebaan and Vredenburg – the latter for scholar transport over 3,500kg)
  • AVTS Testing Centres (Airport Industria, Bellville, Cape Town CBD, Kenilworth, Strand, Table View, Wingfield)
  • VTS Testing Centres (Athlone, Diep River)

Promoting Safer Roads

Western Cape Mobility Minister Isaac Sileku emphasized the importance of vehicle safety ahead of the holiday period.

“As we approach Easter, we urge all road users to prioritize safety. Our free vehicle safety checks give motorists the chance to ensure their vehicles are in proper condition before embarking on their journeys,” said Sileku.

“A well-maintained vehicle is crucial in preventing crashes caused by mechanical failures. I encourage all drivers to take advantage of this initiative and help make our roads safer for everyone.”

Motorists are encouraged to make use of this free service as part of their holiday travel preparations.
