The department of health has announced that more than 3 000 new coronavirus infections have been recorded in the country, over the latest 24-hour monitoring period, when 3 221 positive test results were confirmed.

The province with the highest daily number of new infections is Gauteng, with more than 1 200 cases, followed by the Free State with more than 500 infections, while in the Western Cape, 332 new cases were recorded. In the same period, another 44 people have died of covid-19-related illnesses. The death toll has breached 55 000 and now stands on 55 012.
