Another 199 people have died, and the death toll now stands on 75 012. The majority of new cases are from the Western Cape, followed by KwaZulu-Natal. So far, more than 8.6-million people have been vaccinated against the virus, with over 19 000 new vaccinations given in the past 24 hours.

The Western Cape Head of Health, Dr Keith Cloete has meanwhile warned people, who want to circumvent the system, to fraudulently obtain a vaccination certificate, that they will find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Cloete says they’ve received reports of some residents, who approached healthcare workers to be issued with vaccination certificates, in order to travel, but without them being inoculated. He says offenders will be reported to the authorities.

At the same time, Cloete said, the provincial health department is also concerned that only over 33% of people in Mitchell’s Plain, over 60 years of age, have either been partially or fully vaccinated. This is in stark contrast with seniors in the Overberg, where the vaccination rate stands at over 76% . Closer in the Metro, in Klipfontein, more than 70% of those over 60 have received a covid-19 jab. Cloete says Mitchell’s Plain is right next door to Klipfontein, yet the 33% stands out in relation to the more than 70%.
