South African scientists have found that the Omicron variant reduces antibody protection generated by the Pfizer vaccine.

The small preliminary study released yesterday found a 41-fold drop in the ability of the antibodies to neutralize the Omicron variant, compared with the original virus.

Prof. Alex Sigal from the Africa Health Research Institute however says previous infection, followed by vaccination or a booster shot is likely to prevent severe disease from Omicron infection.

“Importantly, most vaccinologists agree that current vaccines will still protect against severe disease & death in the face of Omicron infection. It’s therefore critical that everyone should be vaccinated.”
