Springbok prop forward Asenathi Ntlabakanye has returned an “adverse analytical finding” during routine testing conducted by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), SA Rugby confirmed.

Ntlabakanye has disputed that he committed any anti-doping violation. According to SA Rugby, the substance involved was a non-performance-enhancing medication, prescribed by a specialist physician earlier this year for medical reasons.

It was reportedly taken under the supervision of a doctor appointed to manage the medical affairs of professional rugby players.

The union stressed that Ntlabakanye was transparent in declaring his medication, acted in good faith, and followed the correct medical procedures.

“At no time did he seek to obtain an unfair advantage nor did he take any medical substance without prior medical authorisation,” SA Rugby said.

As the SAIDS process unfolds, Ntlabakanye will not be considered for the upcoming Springbok tour to New Zealand, allowing him to focus on defending his case.

Neither the player nor the Springbok coaching staff will comment further until the matter has been resolved.
