The South African Police Service (SAPS) has strongly condemned acts of vigilantism, warning that mob justice will not be tolerated following a disturbing incident in Forest Village, Eersterivier.

Police say the body of a 42-year-old man was discovered on Hood Street on Tuesday, with early indications suggesting the killing may be linked to the alleged kidnapping and rape of a three-year-old girl in the same area.

According to SAPS spokesperson Colonel FC van Wyk, the child was first reported missing by her father at Kleinvlei SAPS earlier that day.

Van Wyk said the child was later found in Forest Drive after community members heard her screams.

“Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation. The three-year-old child was taken to a nearby medical facility for examination. This case will be transferred to Kuilsrivier FCS for further investigation. Investigation continues.”

While police investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, authorities say they cannot rule out the possibility of mob justice.

Van Wyk warned that such actions undermine the rule of law.

“Mob justice is criminal and poses a direct threat to the safety and stability of our communities. No individual or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the circumstances. Such actions undermine the justice system and fuel further violence.”

Police have urged the public to assist with information that could help identify those responsible for the killing.

“We urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information that could assist the investigation to contact the police immediately. Information can be provided anonymously via Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the MySAPS mobile application.”

Investigations into both the child abuse case and the man’s death are continuing.
