SA Teams Shine as Vodacom URC Returns with a Bang

Published on

South African rugby teams delivered a thrilling weekend in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship, with three out of four sides securing crucial victories.

The Vodacom Bulls, Hollywoodbets Sharks, and DHL Stormers all claimed wins to boost their playoff hopes, while the Emirates Lions fought hard but fell short, earning a vital losing bonus point.

Bulls Stun Log-Leaders Leinster

The Vodacom Bulls pulled off the shock of the round, handing Leinster their first defeat of the season with a last-gasp 21-20 victory at Loftus Versfeld. With the game on the line, David Kriel coolly slotted a penalty in the 83rd minute, securing a dramatic win.

Leinster led 10-6 at halftime and extended their lead early in the second half, but a penalty try and a Johan Grobbelaar score swung the momentum. A late red card to Sebastian de Klerk nearly cost the Bulls, but they held their nerve to clinch a massive result.

Sharks Edge Zebre in Thriller

The Hollywoodbets Sharks had to dig deep to snatch a 35-34 victory over Zebre Parma in Durban. A last-minute try by Ethan Hooker and a clutch conversion from Jordan Hendrikse sealed the win in a game packed with attacking rugby.

The Sharks raced to a 14-0 lead through early tries from Siya Kolisi and Jurenzo Julius, but Zebre fought back to take control. The visitors led 34-28 before the Sharks’ powerful scrummaging forced a yellow card, setting up Hooker’s decisive score.

Stormers Power Past Scarlets

The DHL Stormers secured a crucial bonus-point 29-17 win against the Scarlets in Wales, pushing them into the top eight. Ben Loader and Deon Fourie got the Capetonians off to a flying start before the Scarlets closed the gap. With the match finely balanced at 15-14, Leolin Zas and Andre-Hugo Venter delivered the knockout blows to ensure a key victory.

Lions Fall Short in Cardiff

The Emirates Lions showed plenty of fight but suffered a narrow 20-17 defeat to Cardiff on Friday night. They led at various stages but were undone by crucial errors, including a late intercept try. A yellow card for Gianni Lombard in the dying minutes proved costly, though they salvaged a losing bonus point to stay within reach of the top eight.

SA Teams in the Playoff Race

The Vodacom Bulls sit third on the table with 45 points, trailing only Leinster and Glasgow Warriors. The Sharks follow closely in fourth place on 44 points. The Stormers’ win lifts them to eighth, level with the Ospreys on 33 points, while the Lions drop to 13th with 30 points.

With five pool rounds remaining, the playoff race is heating up, and the South African sides are right in the mix.
