The City of Cape Town is set to put road closures in place in preparation for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, set to take place this Sunday.
This year’s event will undergo a final-stage evaluation to join the ranks of the Abbott World Marathon Majors as part of its candidacy for inclusion in 2026. Having successfully completed the first assessment phase in 2024, organisers must now meet a 104-point criteria focused on operational excellence and participant experience.
Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says a key focus area for this year’s evaluation is ensuring that no vehicles are parked along the route. Smith has therefore called on the public’s support in maintaining this standard.
“The City remains committed to supporting the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon in its journey to achieving Abbott World Marathon Major status. Joining this prestigious group would be an incredible milestone not only for Cape Town and South Africa, but for the entire continent,” said Smith.

Smith added that the City’s teams have been working closely with marathon organisers over the past few months, on the race route, coordinating logistics, and finalising plans to ensure a safe and successful event for all.
Residents and motorists are therefore urged to cooperate by adhering to parking and road closure rules.
