Nyala torched in Makhaza

Published on

Makhaza police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the burning of a SAPS Nyala on Wednesday at 8:40 p.m. on Baden Powell Drive, at the Empolweni informal settlement.

According to reports, a group was protesting against the lack of service delivery when they allegedly set the vehicle alight.

Members of Public Order Police, Faure (POPS), were attending a protest action where approximately 180 disgruntled community members were protesting.

The crowd was pushed back utilising the police Nyala, but when the officers were busy reversing back to Baden Powell Drive, they noticed smoke inside the vehicle.

They quickly jumped out and noticed that it was on fire.

Fire and rescue services attended to the scene to extinguish the fire.

The officers were not injured. Makhaza police registered a case of attempted murder, public violence and malicious damage to property.

The police have appealed to anyone with information to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or use the mobile application MySAPS anonymously.

The incident comes on the same day that the SAPS launched its Safer Festive Season Operational plan at the Khayelitsha Stadium on Wednesday morning.
