Children from Christel House in Cape Town have collaborated with artists to create a mesmerising exhibition under the theme “Renewal”, which is taking place in Kalk Bay this week.

An image depicting the wonders of Spring and Renewal was selected by the artists and divided into 56 squares. Fifty six canvas panels were then handed out to the learners – who come from Cape Town’s most disadvantaged and impoverished communities – and they were asked to each recreate a square of the image using materials from their homes, neighbourhoods and school.

“This gave the learners an opportunity to express themselves through the joy of art, while appreciating how waste can be recycled and reused.”, says artist AJ Burns.

The artists guided and assisted the learners and their teachers, and then attached all 56 panels to complete the image and create a beautifully vibrant work of art.

The learners’ artwork will be on display in various locations along the Main Rd in Kalk Bay and St James, along with the work of artists AJ Burns, Gavin Larkin and Sharon Paterson at the INK BOX Gallery, from 21st-27th September.

At the end of the exhibition the learners’ artwork will be auctioned and proceeds will be split between the school and the Turtle Rehabilitation Programme at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

RENEWAL ART EXHIBITION – 21st-27th of September 2022 / Ink Box Gallery, Memory Lane, Kalk Bay.
