Dolly Parton, the beloved country music icon whose extraordinary career spanned almost six decades, has died at the age of 80, after a brief battle with cancer.
Born on January 19, 1946, in a one-room cabin in Tennessee, Parton grew up as one of 12 children in a family she later described as “dirt poor”. Music was part of her childhood, and by the age of six she was performing in church, playing guitar by seven and writing songs from a young age.
Her professional career began early. She was performing on local radio and television by the age of 10 and made her first recording at 11. After moving to Nashville immediately after high school, she established herself first as a songwriter before becoming one of the world’s most recognisable performers.
Parton wrote more than 3,000 songs, including enduring classics such as Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You. The latter became an international phenomenon when Whitney Houston recorded it for The Bodyguard soundtrack.
With more than 100-million records sold, Parton was one of the best-selling recording artists of all time. She won 11 Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, and earned recognition across music, film and television.
Her talents extended well beyond music. Parton starred in films including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and Steel Magnolias, while also becoming a successful businesswoman through ventures including Dollywood.
But perhaps her most enduring legacy will be the difference she made away from the spotlight.
In 1988, she founded the Dollywood Foundation, which later became home to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. The literacy programme provides free books to children from birth until they enter kindergarten and has grown to serve almost 850,000 children each month across thousands of communities.
She also supported healthcare, disaster relief, education and medical research. Her $1-million donation to Vanderbilt University Medical Centre helped fund early research that contributed to the development of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. She donated millions more to communities affected by disasters, including the 2016 Tennessee wildfires and Hurricane Helene in 2024.
Parton’s final years were marked by continued creativity, even as she faced health challenges. She released her rock album Rockstar in 2023, collaborated with artists across generations and continued to appear publicly in 2026. Her last public appearance was in June, while in August she sent a recorded message to Dollywood after health problems prevented her from attending an event in person.
Her death has prompted tributes from across the music world and beyond. The Academy of Country Music said Parton leaves behind “a legacy that reaches far beyond the stage”, while the Grand Ole Opry described her as “a true country music icon”. Flowers were placed at her Hollywood Walk of Fame star and her statue in Sevierville, while books of condolence were opened at the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Dolly Parton once said she wanted her appearance to reflect the outgoing personality inside her. In the end, that larger-than-life spirit became one of her greatest gifts.
