The City of Cape Town has confirmed that refuse collection services are running behind schedule across several areas, with teams working to clear the growing backlog.

“The City of Cape Town advises residents in the Atlantic Seaboard, from Atlantis to Hout Bay and some inland suburbs, that refuse collection is currently behind schedule and teams are working on resolving the delays with urgency,” the municipality said in a statement.

The affected areas include Hout Bay, the Atlantic Seaboard, Atlantis, the Southern Suburbs up to Bishopscourt, as well as parts of Athlone, and the Cape Flats, including Manenberg and Langa.

The City explained that many properties due for service on Tuesday were only being attended to on Wednesday, with “knock-on effects expected to continue throughout the week.”

Residents are requested to keep their refuse out until 21:00, to ensure that it is collected, “as teams will be working later to clear [the] backlog”.

However, the City warned that collection will not be done after dark in high-crime areas due to safety risks.

In such cases, residents should bring bins inside overnight and put them out again by 06:30 the following morning.

“The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused. Residents are reminded not to resort to illegal dumping. All backlogs will be cleared as quickly as possible once normal operations resume.”

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to make use of recycling and composting to manage excess waste.

The City has also reassured households that stolen bins can be replaced within 10 working days through its online service.
