The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed that it is investigating a case of assault involving a police officer at the Lwandle Police Station in Strand, after a video of the incident went viral over the weekend.

The video shows the officer involved in a verbal altercation with a man who was allegedly drunk outside the police station before smacking him.

It is understood the man had gone to the police station after being stabbed. However, the officer allegedly accused him of going to the station to assault police members before the situation escalated.

The incident has since sparked concern over the conduct of police officers and their treatment of members of the public.

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Wesley Twigg says the officer is facing disciplinary action following his behaviour.

“In response to your media enquiry kindly be advised that an assault case was registered for further investigation. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made yet. Departmental disciplinary procedures have been instituted against the member.”

Meanwhile, Western Cape Minister for Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais says she is deeply concerned about the conduct of the police officer.

“The behaviour of the police officer depicted in the circulating video is completely unacceptable and must not be tolerated. Incidents like this further tarnish the already strained trust relationship between residents and the police.”
