Residents, particularly parents, have expressed outrage after a fatal shooting took place outside Greenlands Primary School on Sky Road in Bishop Lavis.

A 26-year-old man was gunned down opposite the school on Tuesday morning. The suspects remain at large, and the motive for the attack is still unclear.

According to Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed that a murder case was registered for investigation.

“Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victim with gunshot wounds to his body. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined, the suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.”

The Bishop Lavis Crime Prevention Forum (CPF) has condemned the incident in the strongest terms. Its chairperson, Graham Lindhorst, said SAPS have to do all in its power to deal with the issue of gangsterism.

“It is not right that our learners be subjected to such a learning environment. We again call on SAPS to be proactive instead of reactive. It is unacceptable that gangsters control our communities.”

The Western Cape Education Department opted not to comment on the matter, noting that it was more a community policing issue that within its mandate.

Spokesperson Bronagh Hammond did, however, confirm that now pupils were affected by the incident.

“The incident happened while lessons were taking place, so no learners witnessed the incident.”
