The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) is urging commuters to remain calm and not act on speculation over possible fare increases, because it has yet to decide whether taxi fares will be increased following fuel price hikes.
SANTACO’s National Spokesperson, Mmatshikhidi Rebecca Phala, noted that the council is working to find “an ideal and sustainable solution” that considers the financial realities of taxi operators, employees in the industry, as well as commuters.
As such, she said no decision on fare increases or any announcement thereof has been made yet.
“The Council recognises that any adjustment to fares has a direct impact on commuters and therefore believes that all possible options must first be explored before a position is reached… particularly at a time when all sectors of society are experiencing significant economic pressure.”
The group said it met with some stakeholders on Tuesday and the impact of high fuel costs was discussed. It plans to meet with the National Transport Department as well as other government and industry stakeholders in the coming days to find ways to mitigate the impact.
Phala said these engagements are taking place after the Council’s National Office Bearers resolved that further engagements were needed to find a solution.
“As part of the consultations, SANTACO will engage its industry members to assess the impact of the fuel-price increases, while also engaging fuel suppliers and business partners on possible cushioning measures that could be achieved through the industry’s collective buying power,” said Phala.
She added that another meeting is scheduled with SANTACO’s National Executive Committee on Wednesday for further deliberations.
“The Council will communicate its position once a collective decision has been concluded.”
