While Trevor Noah may have taken a leave of absence from the Met Gala this year, we had another South African trading water for sand on the red carpet, under the theme “The Garden of Time”.

Tyla made her very first appearance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art last night, sculpted in sand. The strapless Balmain Gown was inspired by “sands of time”, and the Grammy-winner accessorised with an hourglass clutch bag.

Speaking to Vogue, Tyla says she was excited to be at the Met Gala this year and see the photos after the dust had settled.

Up to 450 guests were at the black-tie event this year, from actors, and musicians to moguls from all spheres of Hollywood.

The extravaganza would be nothing without high fashion, and even an outfit change – which Zendaya gladly offered in her first time back in five years. The star first appeared in a bold and edgy Maison Margiela gown.

She then returned with what looks to be a Frida Kahlo-inspired look, donning a floral headpiece and a black gown by John Galliano.

Cardi B took the biggest night in fashion and made it even bigger with her Windowsen gown.

Sarah Jessica Parker was so Carrie Brandshaw at the gala this year, with a Richard Quinn corset gown.
