Rail operations have resumed following a fatal incident in Strand, where a man was struck and killed by a train on Monday morning.

The incident led to the temporary suspension of services on the line from the Helderberg region to Cape Town.

According to the Western Cape branch of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), the incident took place along the railway line in Strand, near School Street.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed that the circumstances of the incident are under investigation, noting that the victim was a 34-year-old man.

Van Wyk said the incident occurred at about 06:23.

Meanwhile, Somerset West police have registered an inquest docket.

PRASA Metrorail spokesperson, Zino Mihi, said the agency could not speculate on the cause of death, as this “forms part of the official SAPS investigation”.

Mihi advised that while train services were suspended briefly, for emergency and law enforcement personnel to attend to the scene, regular services had since resumed.

Authorities have urged anyone with knowledge of the events leading up to and surrounding the incident to come forward.

“Anyone with information about this incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111”, said Van Wyk.
