Man arrested in connection with Kraaifontein murders

Published on

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has announced that a 49-year-old suspect has been arrested for at least one of the double murders in Kraaifontein on Tuesday evening.

Masemola, who is in the province to address the ongoing gang violence in the province, made the announcement at the Kraaifontein police station on Wednesday afternoon, in a hurriedly arranged press conference.

On Tuesday, Masemola held engagements with the communities of Mitchells Plain and Mfuleni, together with his provincial counterpart, Thembisile Patekile, Police Minister Firoz Cachalia and other senior officials in the Western Cape.

At Wednesday’s press conference, Masemola said it was encouraging to note that within a few hours of the killing of six people, which included four women and two men, police officers had registered a breakthrough.

The 49-year-old suspect was arrested in Kraaifontein. For now, he is linked to the one double murder of the two women.

In terms of linking him to the other scenes, Masemola says they are still conducting identity parades with witnesses.

The Commissioner says the firearm that was allegedly used in the crime was found hidden in a shop of a foreign national in this area.

Three foreign nationals have also been arrested, one being a shop owner, for being in possession of this illegal firearm as well as ammunition.

The firearm has been taken in for ballistics testing.

Officers are still in Kraaifontein following leads, and Masemola says more arrests in this case are expected.
