The first Covid-19 positive patient, admitted to the High Care Unit at the Victoria Hospital, and who required intensive critical-care management and ventilation, has been discharged.

The 30-year old Robson Shaby, was admitted to hospital with severe Covid-19 pneumonia, and due to the nature of his infection, had to receive mechanical ventilation for almost 4 weeks.

He finally managed to beat the virus, and walked out of the hospital a survivor on 30 June.

He told Smile 90.4 FM the hard work of the doctors and nurses at the hospital played a critical role in his recovery:

Dr Caryl Hollmann, Head of Department of Anaesthesia, shares that there were multiple eventful times during his stay in ICU, especially afterhours.

“If it were not for the dedication of the on-call physician and ICU staff, a different outcome may have occurred. Though Mr. Shaby initially also required a feeding tube and a tracheostomy, the hard work of our physiotherapists and dieticians meant that he could eventually have both removed and start speaking and eating for the 1st time in 3 weeks.”
