Local artists rally in Kalk Bay for World Ocean Day

Published on

In a show of community spirit and environmental commitment, 15 local artists will unite for a one-day exhibition on Saturday, 31 May 2025, at the Kalk Bay Community Centre in honour of World Ocean Day.

Running from 10:00 to 17:00, the event seeks to raise funds for innovative beach-cleaning equipment aimed at combating plastic pollution along the False Bay shoreline.

The initiative is led by artist and environmental advocate Margot King, a member of the Kalk Bay Anti-Litter Group.

The funds raised will support the development of a specialised beach-cleaning sieve, designed to target plastic debris that conventional methods struggle to remove.

“False Bay is a jewel of biodiversity, but plastic pollution is choking our shores and poisoning our sea life. Through this exhibition, we want to inspire people to see the beauty of what we are protecting and to be part of the solution,” said King.

The exhibition brings together a vibrant mix of local talent, including Mandy Colman, Jacqui Geng, Vennie Juliase, Anke Kühn, Gavin Larkin, Heather Maltby, Aubrey Marius, Freddie Sotwa, Kirsten Slater, Gavin Thomson, Marlé van Baalen, Savannah van den Berg, and Elfriede Webb.

Each artist will donate a portion of their sales to the cause.

The event will also feature Re.Bag.Re.Use, an award-winning upcycling initiative known for transforming plastic waste and VHS tape into handcrafted items.

The Kalk Bay Anti-Litter Group collaborates with residents, local businesses, and conservation partners to “restore pride in our coastline, protect marine life, and keep plastic pollution out of the food chain.”

Entry to the exhibition is free, though donations are encouraged.
