The Western Cape has celebrated its top teachers, recognising their dedication, innovation and commitment to improving the lives of learners across the province.

Fifteen teachers and school leaders were honoured at the National Teaching Awards Provincial Ceremony in Cape Town on Friday, 28 August.

Western Cape Education Minister Jaco Londt said teachers play a vital role in learners’ lives, as they are often the first to recognise the talent and potential young people possess.

“Behind every learner in a classroom is a story, a family, a challenge, a dream, and it is often a teacher who is the first to see that story, the first to notice when a child is struggling and the first to believe in what that child can become. These awards are an opportunity to celebrate our exceptional teachers whose innovation, passion and commitment shape the lives of learners and the future of this province.”

Among those recognised was Athina Dennis of Oval North High School in Beacon Valley, Mitchell’s Plain, who received the National Best Teacher Award for the Western Cape.

Dennis says teachers should always strive to give their best to their learners.

“We don’t need permission to give our best to our children – when their future demands nothing less.”

Londt applauded all the winners, stressing that the awards recognise educators who have demonstrated excellence in different areas of teaching and school leadership.

“Congratulations to all the winners who will now represent the Western Cape as nominees for the National Teaching Awards. You have already made us proud by showing up for our learners with dedication, support and love. We are positive that the national judging panel will see what we see: incredibly talented and hardworking individuals who deserve national recognition.”
