EFF National Shutdown, no major incidents in Cape Town

The EFF is expected to take to the streets for their national shutdown today. They are protesting what they have termed the failure of the ANC-run government. They are also protesting the energy crisis and demanding that President Ramaphosa resigns from his post.

 

It has been very quiet in Cape Town, with Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis declaring earlier there is “no shutdown in Cape Town.”

  • The latest update from Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis at 12:30 PM Monday afternoon: ”As of now, there is no protest action in Cape Town that is prohibiting businesses and Capetonians from going about their day. I was part of a flyover over the city and no major incidents were identified. Business as usual but we will remain vigilant.”

 

 

 

 

  • “No signs of protestors mustering at starting point for approved EFF protest march,” says Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith in a Facebook post.

 

 

 

 

  • What’s called Operation Prosper comprises of 3 474 SANDF members, effective from the 17th of March to the 17th of April. The deployment is said to cost the country R166 million. #smile904fmnews

 

  • At the same time, President Cyril Ramaphosa has deployed over 3 400 soldiers from the SANDF, to help maintain law and order today. #smile904fmnews

 

 

 

 

  • National Shutdown: Of the 87 arrests, 41 were in Gauteng, 29 in North West, 15 in Free State. There are also arrests in other provinces such as Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape. #smile904fmnews

  • In addition – At least 24 300 tyres have been seized. Police say the tyres were strategically placed for acts of criminality. 6000 were seized in WC, 4500 in the Free State, 3600 in Gauteng, 1513 in the EC.
