A local primary school along the West Coast is confident that a group of learners will win the top price at an annual renewable energy challenge this year.

Grade 7 learners from Saxonsea Primary School in Atlantis won 2nd place during the Atlantis Renewable Energy Challenge last year. The learners designed and build a their own mini solar panels which was used to recharge cellphones.

The Convener of group Ravin Louw says their idea was such a brilliant concept that it spurred interest by the University of Stellenbosch.

This year, learners submitted ideas in canvas form that show how renewable energy can uplift their community and school.

Organised by GreenCape, the challenge encourages learners to explore renewable energy and promotes interest in the science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics subjects.
