Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities
Western Cape APD is a group of people, both volunteers and staff, who work together with persons with disabilities towards becoming as independent as possible and integrate into society on an equal basis with others. Social services look at all areas of the person’s life, while drawing on related services for child care, education, employment, skills development, occupational therapy, assistive devices, awareness raising, accessibility and training. Our services are free of charge and open to anyone who needs help.
We are one of 9 Provincial Associations situated throughout South Africa affiliated to the National Council for Persons with Physical Disabilities in South Africa (NCPPDSA), which in turn is affiliated to the South African Disability Alliance (SADA) and Rehabilitation International (RI).
We are passionate about creating a better community, lifestyle and workplace for persons with disabilities! This was true of the small group of people who began our organisation in 1937 and it remains true for the many people who join us in our work today.
We work with persons with disabilities to achieve their potential, dreams and goals. This may include (but is not limited to) sourcing mobility devices, dealing with social issues within the home, arranging for home care, caring for children with severe disabilities or lobbying for accessibility in the community.
Anyone who suddenly finds themselves faced with disability and nowhere to turn for advice or help is welcome to call on us!
Disability can happen to anyone at any time, usually when least expected. In our experience, most people are overwhelmed by the new situation in which they find themselves, and have no idea where to find help or advice. They are completely unprepared for the direction their life has taken.
This is where we come in.
We begin a journey with the person, helping them to plan their future and supporting them in developing their ability to become independent. The person is always central to their own development, making changes to their own life in order to achieve their goals and dreams.
Disability affects different people in many different ways, depending on the cause of their impairment, their personality, home life, finances, age, gender, social environment, and many others. Each individual is different, and so our support to each person is tailor-made to their unique needs.
Our aim is for each individual to enjoy a productive, fulfilling and quality life, without the need for support from us. If we can achieve this, we have accomplished our mission!
Anyone who has children will know that the arrival of a new life is a miracle and a wonderful experience for the family. However, when parents discover that their new baby has a disability, they experience a wide range of emotions, including sorrow, fear of the unknown, guilt and even sometimes rejection of the infant.
At these times it is crucial that the family unit receives understanding and support from their loved ones, but with all their good intentions, those loved ones do not always have the necessary knowledge of how to care for a child with a disability.
APD is that safety net, providing support and training to parents on how to best care for their child, ensuring that their child enrolls in the neighborhood early childhood development centre, and going on to facilitate inclusion in the education system when the child reaches school-going age. Parents form a support group for each other, helping with coping with the isolation and stigmatization that unfortunately goes hand in hand with disability.
It is not possible for all children to follow the same path, as their impairments and circumstances differ. Early stimulation and development activities and the opportunity to play with and form friendships with peers are vital for ALL children in order for them to flourish and grow. Children with severe disabilities are able to attend our special care centres where our trained and committed carers will ensure that they receive constant stimulation and development so that they can become the best they can be.
The ability to work, earn an income and create a support one’s family is something many of us take for granted. Work is the means by which an individual can escape poverty and secure the necessities of life. It also plays an important role in promoting a positive and confident self-esteem in people. Unfortunately, many persons with disabilities do not have permanent employment, and are therefore unable to provide for their families.
We will support you on your journey towards employment, including looking into the various employment options available, developing your skills where necessary, discussing job opportunities with employers and providing support to you as you begin your new work.
Our protective workshops and activity groups allow anyone who is unable to work independently to remain active and learn new skills.

Drakenstein Palliative Hospice
At Drakenstein Palliative Hospice we believe in caring for the community, in the community, with the community. Helping people, help people, to embrace life and living… a hopeful future.
Traditionally Hospices care for patients with an expectation of ‘dying’. Due to the changing nature of life-threatening illnesses and the poor socio economic climate and limited resources available, we care for not only the infected patients but also their children and the affected community who are confronted with an expectation of ‘living’ with a life-threatening illness.
Mission
To provide professional palliative care to address the physical, emotional, social, information and cultural needs of persons infected with and affected by a life-threatening illness or life-limiting condition within the Drakenstein District.
Vision
Professional palliative care promoting quality of life. No end to hope.
Palliative care is the holistic care of someone diagnosed with a terminal illness. It includes pain management and symptom control, psychological, emotional and spiritual counselling and is offered to any and all whether or not they are able to pay. Our support extends to the family and friends of patients.
Medical ethical principles strongly inform our approach to care. Patient autonomy, the patient being the head of the team, is key to palliative care. To do no harm and to always check to whose benefit a decision is made, guide, often difficult and controversial, decision making. Our approach is to treat everybody with dignity, respect and equally thereby ensuring just, ethical practices.

I Will Be Your Voice
The Chipembere Rhino Foundation is a privately run, registered non-profit organization IT/95/2011 committed to assisting in the protection and conservation of Africa’s rhino. This once highly endangered species, whose total population in the early 1950’s amounted to fewer than 500 animals as a result of the pressure of poaching had clawed its way back, thanks to a small yet dedicated team of conservationists.
These conservationist’s efforts resulted in one of Africa’s most amazing conservation success stories, that success is today evident in Africa’s approximate 18,500 White Rhino and 3000 Black Rhino. But in recent years the poaching threat has escalated to a current rate exceeding 1 rhino poached per day!
Africa’s rhino are again under pressure and is now facing a threat that could take them back to the brink of extinction. For an animal that has been in existence for around 50 million years, the world would be at a great and tragic loss without this species.
“On Saturday, 28 January 2012, Cape Town based singer, songwriter, author and motivational speaker Rozanne Visagie, composed a song dedicated to the rhino poaching cause. The process and recording of the song, aptly named “I’ll be your voice” (link to YouTube video will be added onto website soon) was further inspired by Rozanne’s encounter with Dr Will Fowlds, wildlife vet and trustee of the Chipembere Rhino Foundation and a realisation that the tragedy of poaching is not purely about the effects on the animals themselves, but also on the eco-systems that the people of Africa depend on.
After months of logistical research and finally finding an empathy with South African and overseas event planners/project managers, the “I will be your voice” campaign was born.
The initiative aims to organise a number of rhino related fundraising events, and in future will support various conservation focused beneficiaries. The events will combine a dinner, a short auction and a concert showcasing local artists who want to be involved in supporting the chosen cause.
The first part of the campaign will raise awareness about the rhino issue, and will be supporting the incredible work being done on anti-poaching initiatives by the ‘Chipembere Rhino Foundation’, which is based in the Eastern Cape. Helen Turnbull of Serendipity Africa is the local representative for the foundation.
In future the aim is to create awareness and raise funds for other endangered species, and to support projects where local communities can be assisted so that they can understand the benefits of partnering with conservation. Education is an important legacy of the project, essentially to ensure that people understand how their decisions and interactions with nature, as well as by valuing biodiversity, can create sustainable futures.
“By using music as a “voice” for the voiceless we truly hope that we can open up new horizons for the people of Africa, and that we can facilitate a platform for communication that will raise awareness of the plight of animals that cannot speak for themselves. Please support us in our endeavours by booking to attend the events, donating to the “I will be your voice” project, and by bidding on the exciting items that will be available for auction”, said Rozanne Visagie. “There is not a moment to waste”. Jag Foundation
Sport is not just a game: it’s a set of life lessons and any child growing up without it is seen as disadvantaged.
Alcohol and drugs are the root of South Africa’s ills like gangsterism, crime, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence and unemployment.
The JAG Foundation’s aim is to offer positive alternatives, by using sport as a catalyst, in order to ‘create the change’.
The JAG Foundation believes in creating change and that sport is a powerful tool for personal & social upliftment, health and wellbeing, and when utilized correctly, an influential force in combating societal issues such as drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, crime, underage drinking, racism, sexism, social discrimination, poverty, and unemployment.
