JOHN KANI ON THE HEALING POWER OF THE ARTS

On Valentines Day the 9th annual KykNet Fiestas were held at a glittering event held in Cape Town.

Recognising outstanding performances and contributions in the Arts, the highlight of the evening was the recognition and awarding of the lifetime achievement award to both John Kani and Sandra Prinsloo.

Both actors, producers, writers have contributed so much to South Africa, but it was the speech delivered by John that has reached people far and wide.

It’s funny, it’s poignant, it’s reflective but more than that it’s a sign of healing. As John says we can truly come together in the creative arts.

Recognition of his lifetime includes Doctorates from the Universities of Cape Town and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, as well as the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver in 2016.

The main theatre of the Market Theatre complex in Newtown, Johannesburg, has been renamed The John Kani Theatre in his honour.

Film has been a big part of his career and recently he played the part of T’Chaka the father of The Black Panther and in the CGI remake of the iconic The Lion King, he is the voice of Rafiki.

For me, this award is personal. I lived in Johannesburg in the eighties and was there when protest theatre raised its head and slowly became a significant movement of change and always you saw the face of John Kani.

I remember the first kiss between a black man, John, and a white woman, Sandra Prinsloo, in the play Othello, and the controversy it caused and the very real possibility of being arrested.

To see these two icons being recognised is almost going full circle but to hear the words of John Kani…that is history.

Who’s the Better Driver?

It’s not often that Bobby & Lindy bash heads, but what started out as a conversation about passing one’s driver’s license test led to an argument about who the better driver is – men or women? Angel Campey from the Smile Drive heard the altercation and challenged both to prove themselves where it mattered – on the road. Bobby & Lindy accepted Angel’s challenge to redo their driver’s license test.

Since then they’ve been surprised by senior traffic officer Richard Coleman who had been working with Producer Phil to arrange a time and date for them to take the test, but of course, you can’t get a driver’s license without passing your learners first. So it was time to hit the books, specifically the K53 books, and prepare to head to the Gallows Hill traffic department to prove that they both rules of the road.

On Friday the 22nd of February the two went to meet Richard Coleman at the traffic department and sat down to answer the K53 test.

The studying seemed to pay off for at least one of them. Richard gave Bobby & Lindy a call the following Monday and told Bobby that he would need to rewrite his learners because he had failed by one point on the road rules section of the learner’s license test. A small victory for Lindy and a knock on Bobby’s ego.

Bobby was determined to pass the second time around and crammed in some last minute studying.

Thankfully, he passed on his second attempt.

It’s been finalised. Bobby & Lindy will be re-taking their driver’s license test on Monday 18 March at 11:00. They needed some last minute tips and tricks.

Tune in to Smile Breakfast, weekday mornings from 6 to 9, to keep up with their progress.

MEMORIES OF CODY BRINGS JOY TO BEACHGOERS

A box full of yellow tennis balls placed on a popular beach in Cape Town, has touched many dog lovers’ hearts.

Linda Bamford Hefer and her 17 year old daughter Cayley Hefer placed a box with a message and a picture of their dog Cody on Bloubergstrand, in memory of the 8-year-old Maltese Poodle-Yorkie who recently passed away.

People who visited the popular beach were drawn towards the box, uploading pictures of it on their social media platforms.

Hefer says she did not know that this tribute gesture would touch so many people but she says she feels real grateful for all the beautiful comments by everyone who has shared it.
Linda says it was her daughter Cayley who came up with the idea to leave a tribute for Cody after his traumatic sudden death from pancreatitis.
