Ramaphosa approves salary increases for public office bearers

ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced salary increases for public office bearers of between 3.8% and 4.1%, depending on the category of position they hold.

In a statement, the Presidency said this follows the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office-Bearers’ recommendation of a 4.1% salary increment for all public office bearers, regardless of position.

But Ramaphosa says he first considered what impact the Commission’s recommendations would have on the fiscus before deciding to increase the salaries of public office-bearers by category.

The increase of 4.1% applies to judges, magistrates, traditional leaders and members of independent constitutional institutions.

The increase of 3.8% applies to Members of the National Executive, Members of Parliament, members of provincial executive councils and members of provincial legislatures.

This means the salary of Deputy President Paul Mashatile will rise to R3.2 million, while Ministers will earn R2.7 million, and Deputy Ministers R2.2 million.

These increases will take effect from 1 April 2026.

The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office-Bearers is constitutionally mandated to make annual recommendations on the salaries, allowances and benefits of public office-bearers.

In doing so, the commission considers factors including affordability, inflation, state resources, public service pay levels, and the roles and responsibilities of those in office.

President Ramaphosa has expressed his appreciation for the diligence and integrity with which the Commission developed its recommendations.

Die Kantoor is here and it’s HILARIOUS!

The Office is more than just a sitcom – it’s a global franchise with the UK’s original version getting spin-offs in 15 different countries. South Africa has joined the global craze with Die Kantoor and it’s HILARIOUS. The weekly sitcome is available to watch on Showmax with a double-bill premier today. We were joined by two of the stars Albert Pretorius and Daniah de Villiers.

Albert’s portrayal of Flip, the manager at polony distributors Deluxe Processed Meats, is our very own re-imagining of the manager role in The Office that earned both Ricky Gervais and Steve Carell their first Golden Globes, as David Brent in the British version and Michael Scott in the US version, respectively. Daniah plays Emma Engelbrecht who joins the team as the social media manager (and subsequently Flips P.A. – which she only found out after getting the job).

In addition to Pretorius and de Villiers, the cast includes SAFTA winner Schalk Bezuidenhout (Kanarie, Hotel), screen legend Lida Botha (Die Kwiksilvers), Mehboob Bawa (Bhai in Bhai’s Cafe), Carl Beukes (Jozi, The Shakedown), Silwerskerm winner Ilse Oppelt (Oh Schuks I’m Gatvol, Fishy Fêshuns), Sipumziwe Lucwaba, and Gert du Plessis.

Angel Wings Soars to Cape2Rio Victory!

In a thrilling triumph on the high seas, the RCYC Sailing Academy’s Alexforbes Angel Wings crew has claimed first place on handicap in the 2025 Cape2Rio Yacht Race, one of the world’s most gruelling offshore sailing challenges.

The iconic race spans some 3,300 nautical miles from Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro, demanding extraordinary endurance, skill and mental toughness as crews battle the full force of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Angel Wings victory was hard-earned. In the early hours of 10 January, while holding a commanding lead of about 25 hours, the yacht suffered a dramatic boom failure during a gybe – a setback that could easily have ended their race. Refusing to give up, the young crew improvised, re-hoisting the mainsail without a boom and pushing on in a bold display of courage and seamanship.

After 19 intense days at sea, facing relentless swells, constant fatigue and moments of real uncertainty, the youth-led team crossed the finish line off Rio de Janeiro to secure the prestigious win, capturing attention and admiration far beyond sailing circles.

The six-member crew, drawn from marginalised communities through the Royal Cape Yacht Club Sailing Academy, showcased exceptional teamwork and resilience. Skipper Sibusiso “Sibu” Sizatu, alongside Yonela Temela, Philasande Gwala, Yobanathi Klaas, Sesona Ntsaluba and Renaldo Mohale, proved that preparation, trust and belief can overcome even the toughest challenges. Four of the six sailors are women, marking an important step in promoting gender diversity in the sport.

Backed by headline sponsor Alexforbes, the campaign also stands as a milestone for inclusivity in offshore sailing.

The achievement has been widely hailed as more than a race win – it is a powerful symbol of opportunity, national pride and the potential of South Africa’s youth.

Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, praised the crew’s composure and determination, saying the victory showed how young sailors, given the right support, can rise to extraordinary occasions.

The Angel Wings triumph builds on the RCYC Sailing Academy’s growing legacy, following a podium finish by the Alexforbes ArchAngel team in the 2023 Cape2Rio race, and firmly cements South Africa’s place on the global offshore sailing stage.

A Cape of Good Hope SPCA (SPCA) operation last week saw inspectors recover 120 fish from unhygienic conditions in a swimming pool at a home in Fish Hoek.

The incident initially came to light weeks prior, when the SPCA received a cruelty complaint of a house where live fish were being kept. The SPCA said it had conducted several inspections of the premises and found the fish in “stagnant, green and heavily contaminated water” in the pool.

Formal warnings were given to address the situation, but the SPCA said no progress was made.

“Multiple formal warnings were issued; however, the conditions did not improve, adequate care was not provided, and attempts to secure voluntary compliance were unsuccessful,” read the SPCA statement.

Inspectors reported that efforts to resolve the matter cooperatively failed, encountering “resistance and a refusal to engage meaningfully”.

The SPCA then approached the Simon’s Town Magistrates Court for a warrant, authorising it to enter the property and remove the animals. The warrant in terms of the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 was granted.

“Due to ongoing non-compliance and the reasonable belief that the fish were suffering unnecessarily, the SPCA applied to the Simon’s Town Magistrates’ Court for a warrant.”

That warrant was executed on 14 January, with the assistance of the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement’s Animal Control Unit.

Inspectors confirmed that the conditions of the pool were still the same as with previous inspections, with extremely poor water quality that had limited visibility and contained large amounts of waste.

“Items recovered from the water included plastic bags, plastic materials, skateboards, brooms, dustpans, pots, and other household refuse. The swimming pool was effectively being used as a dumping site while still containing live fish.”

The SPCA said the operation was strenuous and long, having taken six and half hours to recover all the fish in the pool.

Of the fish recovered, the SPCA said “two fish were already in a compromised condition, and seven fish died shortly after arrival despite intervention”. The remaining fish are undergoing assessment and receiving treatment.

“This case serves as a reminder that all animals, including fish, are protected under animal welfare legislation and are entitled to humane treatment and proper care,” said the SPCA.
