A Metro Police officer will soon receive a notice of suspension after being arrested in connection with the sale of firearms in Muizenberg. 

The Western Cape SAPS confirmed that the 27-year-old female constable was arrested on the evening of last Wednesday, following an operation by the National Intervention Unit. 

According to a spokesperson, Captain F.C. Van Wyk, the unit had received intel about firearms being sold at a premises on Seagull Street in Pelican Heights.  

The premises was searched, and firearms and ammunition were found in a vehicle. 

“In a Hyundai members found a AK 47 without a serial number and a camouflage box with a large amount of ammunition,” said Van Wyk in a statement.  

The woman, who the City’s Metro Police Department confirmed is a junior constable, was arrested alongside two other men, aged 38 and 42. They face charges for the possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.  

“The exhibits were handed in for further processing.  This case will be investigated by the Provincial Detectives Organised Crime. The suspects are due to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrates court once charged,” said Van Wyk.  

Spokesperson for the City’s Metro Police Department, Ruth Solomons, said the constable was off duty at the time of the arrest. She added that the City has a strict code of conduct for its staff. 

“… with zero tolerance for illegal activities or impropriety. The notice of suspension will be served on the officer once she is released from detention, to be followed by a swift disciplinary process,” said Solomons.
